right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead
the case of the widow.’

The very first chapter
of Isaiah is a call to repentance. God is fed up with our religiosity, our
smugness, our callousness. Just look around us now and see who is beside us in our
own families, our own communities, our own places of living and working.
The plea is ‘Hear’, ‘Listen’
(v2 ‘Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!’) and turn away from evil this
very day.
